Braces Woodburn

Close up of smiling woman with metal braces at Mid Valley Family Dental in Woodburn, ORWith so many people in the world wearing braces, everyone knows at least one person who is wearing them right now.

We have all seen smiles full of metal and wire and all wondered how braces work. While we have all seen them whether in person or the movies, many times we fail to understand how they work.

For those patients seeking answers to traditional braces and how they work, they can come in to see our Woodburn orthodontist at Mid Valley Family Dental.

What are Traditional Braces?

Whether the actual brackets are made of metal or ceramic, they all utilize the same methodology.

The brackets still get glued to the front of the teeth with a wire attached to it. This wire travels through each one of the brackets to allow for pressure to be applied across the teeth to shift them accordingly.

These are placed by an orthodontist who will periodically tighten the wire to get the teeth to shift under constant pressure.

Who Needs Traditional Braces?

Woodburn braces are an excellent solution for fixing problems with crooked teeth and issues with jaw alignment. These problems can include overbites, crossbites, and underbites.

The age of patients wearing braces has shifted slightly over the last three decades too.

While children still make up the vast majority of patients wearing braces, the number of adult patients has increased incredibly in recent decades.

Different Kinds of Braces

Traditional braces have been around the longest.

They are made of metal and are pretty much the same today as they were at their inception. The brackets and wires work in conjunction with one another to get the teeth to shift into their appropriate positions.

Now, there are other materials used to make braces.

Ceramic is one such material. They can be made clear so they can look almost invisible or tinted to match the other teeth in the patient's mouth.

Both can help the braces appear less obtrusive when the patient smiles.

For other patients, blending in is not what they are about. Ceramic braces can offer them a solution too. For those wanting to have their braces stand out in the crowd, they can have them tinted to any color they wish.

Lingual braces are relatively new. They still use brackets and wires but rather than having them applied to the front side of teeth, they are affixed to the backs of them.

The final option is removable alignment trays. They are made of clear flexible plastic and waylay many of the concerns and complaints about wearing braces.

They can be removed for eating and for oral hygiene care.

Ways to Help Move Teeth Even Further

While pressure moves the teeth to their desired positions, sometimes the wires and brackets are simply not enough.

Spacers are sometimes used to hold proper spacing between teeth. In some cases, bands are used to move specific teeth like springs.

All of these are great tools to help braces shift the teeth.
